Wire, highly regarded through the decades for its minimalist sound, was among the first bands to emerge from London's nascent punk scene, formed in 1976, and their 1977 debut album, "Pink Flag," and the single "12XU" were influential on ensuing generations of musicians: Ian MacKaye (who recorded a version of "12XU" with Minor Threat), Henry Rollins, The Cure, The Minutemen, Manic Street Preachers, Big Black, The Feelies, Elastica, Guided by Voices, Menswe@r, Franz Ferdinand and others. The group retreated to occasional-collaboration status through the '90s before reconvening on a more permanent basis in 2000. In 2017 they released their 16th album, "Silver/Lead." The current lineup consists of original members Colin Newman (vocals/guitar), Graham Lewis (bass/vocals) and Robert Grey (formerly Robert Gotobed; drums), along with Matthew Simms (guitar).
